How the Powerball payout works
The advertised Powerball jackpot is the annuity: one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments, each 5% larger than the one before. The cash value is the amount in the jackpot prize pool, paid at once if the winner chooses the lump sum. Both figures are before taxes.
Since July 21, 2026, Powerball tickets are also sold in the United Kingdom. A U.S. winner's prize is calculated the same way, but if the jackpot is won in both countries it is split by cash value among all winning tickets, so enter the total number of winning tickets under “More options”.
Taxes on Powerball winnings
At the current jackpot, a single winner in Texas who takes the cash would owe about $67,697,000 in federal income tax and take home about $115,403,000. The same winner living in New York City would also owe New York State and city tax, taking home about $88,563,555. Common questions
How much would the Powerball jackpot winner take home?
With the jackpot at $440 Million and a cash value of $183.1 Million, a single winner taking the lump sum keeps about $115,403,000 after federal tax in a state with no income tax, or about $88,563,555 in New York City. Choose your state above for your own estimate.
How are Powerball annuity payments made?
The annuity is paid as 30 payments over 29 years: one when you claim, then one each year. Each payment is 5% larger than the previous one, so the last is about 4.1 times the first. Each payment is taxed in the year you receive it.
How much is withheld when you claim a Powerball jackpot?
The lottery withholds 24% of the prize, minus the ticket price, for federal tax, plus state tax in most states. For the current cash value that is $43,944,000 federal, but the final federal bill at the 37% bracket is about $67,697,000.
